To take that knowledge a little further, and to help you feel more prepared for your purchase, we’re now going to discuss which documents you should bring when you’re ready to buy a car.
Car dealerships will check your driver’s license for two reasons. The first is so that they can verify that your identification matches with the rest of your documents. Additionally, they need to check that you can legally drive the car off the lot.
It’s required that you have insurance in order to legally drive a car. For that reason, you’ll need to show the car dealership proof of this insurance, which is usually done by showing the insurance card. If you don’t have insurance yet or want to change your policy, you can change it beforehand so that the new policy starts on the same day that you take your new car home. If not, you’ll be expected to change your current car insurance policy to match your new vehicle in a timely manner.
You can either pay for your car with cash, a credit card, or a car loan. You can choose what your preferred payment method is, but the most popular method is to finance your car with a loan. If you did get approved for a loan, the funds will generally arrive within one to three business days.
